Snake Rescue

  In an inspiring step toward wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict management, the Division Forest Office, Udaypur–Gaighat, successfully organized a comprehensive “Snake Rescue and Rehabilitation Training” on Jestha 5, 2082 BS, at the DFO meeting hall in Bokesi. This important initiative, conducted under the Provincial Forest Development and Management Program, was specially designed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of frontline forest personnel who often encounter snakes during their daily duties. The training provided participants with both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience in safe snake handling, rescue procedures, and rehabilitation practices. Recognizing the need for proper technical support in field situations, Mithila Wildlife Trust, in collaboration with local experts, proudly contributed a full set of scientific-grade snake rescue equipment to the Division Forest Office. This gesture marks a significant step in strengthening institutional capacity and fostering collaboration between governmental and non-governmental conservation actors. We firmly believe that such initiatives will not only empower forest rangers but also play a vital role in reducing human-snake conflict in the long run—promoting coexistence, safety, and ecological balance. In just two weeks, Mithila Wildlife Trust successfully rescued 18 snakes from various locations,extended across multiple districts of Madhesh Province and even reached as far as Kathmandu Metropolitan City, ensuring safe handling and relocation of snakes in both rural and urban areas. While our organization’s team member Subodh Acharya was on his way home to Kathmandu, a call came for a king cobra rescue at Basbari, located in Ward No. 4 of Dakshinkali Municipality, Kathmandu District. The snake was on the outer wall of a house, and the residents were extremely frightened. Our rescuer, Subodh Acharya, successfully rescued the snake at the right time using the correct method. By doing so, he helped reduce the potential danger from the snake to the household and the community, and also released the snake safely into a suitable habitat.              

We’re happy to share the safe rescue of a little non-venomous rat snake from Binhi, Janakpur Dham. These snakes are completely harmless and often visit homes, storerooms, or wall holes in search of food like rats, frogs, and insects. Locals had been noticing this snake around for quite some time. Thanks to our dedicated team member, Rabinandan Thakur, the snake was gently rescued and safely released back into its natural habitat.
