Recently while returning with NCell team after survey of picnic spot area, we saw a Forsten’s Cat Snake (Boiga forsteni) near Ramdhuni Temple inside Dhanushadham Protected Forest. We rushed to the snake as it was exciting for us to see this species of snake in Dhanusha. It was noted that this species of the snake is found in mountain area of Nepal but not in Terai region yet. Unfortunately the snake was killed and we saw was dead body. We started asking the people nearby and got to know that it was killed by the pilgrims came to the temple. Two number of same snake was there inside temple, one was able to escape by god’s grace and another was killed by those cruel pilgrims. They could have called Forest Deptt. staff from Range Post which is close to the temple but they killed instead. It was really socking for us that the snake was killed inside the protected forest. It was 68 Inch long. The snake was first of it’s species noted in Terai region of the country. SUCCESSFUL FORMATION OF DHANUSHADHAM PROTECTED FOREST MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING COMMITTEE

The first management committee of Dhanushadham Protection Forest was formed on 17.06.2014 AD (03.03.2071 BS). This is the first management committee of the forest since its’ announcement as Dhanushadham Protection Forest on 2069.11.14 BS (03.03.2013 AD). The programme was chaired by Mr. Birendra Sah, DFO Dhanusha, chief guest Mr. Guru Suvedi, LDO Dhanusha and special guest Mr. Ram Bahadur Shhrestha, from Multistakeholder Forestry Programme. Other present members were, Mr. Parmeswar Sah from VDC Federation, Shyam Lal Mahto from Jaladh Sajhedari Forest, Nagrik Samaj, Mahila Sanjal, District level and VDC level active politicians and Media personnel. Eight interaction programmes, micing and Four final meetings were organized in all the villages of Buffer zone for the member selection process. Working committee contains 11 members chaired by Mr. Jagdish Yadav and Monitoring committee of 5 chaired by Mr. Parmeswar Sah. Membership Certificates were distributed by DFO, Birendra Sah to all the working committee and monitoring committee members. Chairman, MWT was selected as secretary of the working committee. MWT Chairman mentioned that this will add an extra effort to the Department of Forest and Mithila Wildlife Trust towards protection and restoration of the forest. “It is a successful achievement for the Two months of joint operation of Department of Forest and Mithila Wildlife Trust” – Mr. Shankar Narayan Jha, AFO, DoF Dhanusha. RESCUE OF ONE JUVENILE COBRA AND ONE BANDED KUKRI SNAKE

Yesterday evening, MWT rescued one Juvenile Cobra (Naja naja) from Mithileshwar-Sirsiya Chowk. The snake was rescued just besides the chowk, so, it helped a lot to aware the public present at the chowk. The chowk is situated in middle of Janakpur-Dhanusha road. Approx. 50 people were present during rescue process. MWT chairman explained about the snake and its importance in ecosystem after the successful rescue. The awareness using live specimen works best in Terai region of Nepal.   Soon after the First rescue, we also attended another snake rescue call. The snake was confirmed as Banded Kukri Snake (Oligodon arnensis) by MWT chairman after the rescue. This is the Fourth Kukri snake rescued from same village. OUTCOME OF CONTINUOUS INTERACTION PROGRAMMES

MWT and DoF has been arranging community interaction programmes in each and every adjoining villages of Dhanushadham Protected Forest since last 3 months. Interaction Programme in Tejnagar DoF and MWT feels that these programmes have been resulting very well for the protection of the forest. Major agendas of the programmes were: 1. Prohibited zone for carrying arms & instruments in DPF, 2. Grazing in barren area instead of core zone of DPF and to find substitute instead of depending on this diminishing forest, 3. Complete restrictions of illegal tree logging inside DPF, 4. Restrictions in community made fire inside DPF, 5. Land encroachment etc. We are glad to see the positive results of interaction programmes inside DPF. Illegal tree logging has been completely stopped, grazing has been done outside core zone, depletion in the number of grazing animals, no firing in last 2 and Half month, the greenery inside forest and returning of blue bulls. The results of our continuous struggle since the appointment of Mr. Shankar Narayan Jha as Assistant Forest Officer at Dhanushadham Range Forest Office can be seen and felt by any of the person. It is an example of successful awareness programmes. We have decided to continue such interaction programmes in each and every month in entire Buffer Zone of the forest.

NCELL TO PLANT 48,000 TREE IN DPF

Following the agreement with The Government of Nepal, Ncell (a Telecom company of Nepal) has decided to plant around 48,000 Nos. of new plants in 31 Hectare land inside Dhanushadham Protected Forest.   It is necessary to mention that out of 360 Hectare of forest land, 114 Hectare is barren area. This plantation is a great support to restore the diminishing forest. After survey, MWT chairman along with the Ncell Core staff went  for sighting of Blue Bull which is the main attraction of the forest. Ncell staff were quite happy to sight the blue bull which was unexpected for them in this diminishing patch of the forest. Rescued an Injured common Crow from Janakpur Drainage.

Today morning our social mobilizer Mr. Mukesh Kumar Rajak rescued an injured crow from the drainage. As per the rescue call received, information was, as a bird was seen inside a drainage and was not able to fly from bushes and water. After the rescue crow was taken to MWT office and checked its health, it was not able to move or open its wing by his own and its left palm was completely  damaged as some of predator’s attack or accident might have happened. When our team fed with food and water he started to move & is trying to be active.We are trying our level best to save its life though we are not sure about the curing of left leg.

MWT & FD Plans for Nature Trail inside Dhanushadham Protected Forest

After the successful completion of Nilghai survey , MWT & FD is planning to introduce a nature trail inside the DPF for the attraction of tourist and to pass the information about the youngest protected forest. During our last survey,  MWT scientific officer Mrs Lintumol P.K.  pointed the main cause for the disappearance of these Nilghais are overgrazing of cattles inside the core area of forest, which forces the Darwin’s law of ‘Survival of the fittest’. So MWT and FD is trying to check the grazing of those cattles inside the core area of the forest with the help and support of nearby community peoples to protect and increase the population of Nilghais of DPF.

MWT Struggle to save life of Speechless creature……

Today afternoon while rescuing a Common Krait from Tarapati of Dhanusha district, we received another rescue call from Dhanushadham about 13 km from the first rescue site, after the quick rescue we rashed to other site within no time, unfortunately our rescue vehicle was failed to reach destination as struck in between for   engine work, though we hired a taxi and reached the spot, some of the peoples hitted the Cat snake as they thought it was viper. After our teams awareness from the site, they understood their mistake and apologized for their misbehave towards to that speechless creature.

Third Interaction Programme at Dhanushadham VDC

Mithila Wildlife Trust and Department of Forest gaining the strength to support the conservation of Dhanushadham Protected Forest from Dhanushadham VDC during an interaction programme held on 10th May 2014. The villagers were eager to know the importance of Tree and DPF in their environment and they were ready to support completely to eradicate present condition of scarcity of water and change in climate after listening to presentation delivered by Dev Narayan Mandal, Chairman, Mithila Wildlife Trust and Documentary presented on Climate Change Effects in Nepal. An important decision was taken by the community people in the program that they will  stop grazing their animals in the core zone of the forest and will find substitute instead of depending completely on the forest. Mr. Shankar Narayan Jha, AFO, DoF, Dhanusha appreciated the decision. He also added that it will help DoF and MWT to restore the diminishing forest by protecting regenerating plants inside core area.
