The women of the community banking group
‘Jay Ma Laxmi Bipanna Barga Mahila Krishak’ Group in Madhesh Province
From this community bank women apply for small loans to invest in their agricultural practises. Loans are invested into a variety of agricultural goods, from mushroom cultivation, to irrigation pipes or basic equipment that can improve yields and reduce physical labour.
Every first day of the month, the women of the community bank gather here to collect the money. Each woman contributes to the community bank – a system built on trust, consistency and collective care.Community banks like this one provide accessible financial services for women who are often excluded from formal banking. Many women want to join the bank due to its success. The women in the group collectively decide who can join and receive loans. Many are waiting for the opportunity to join – a reflection of the trust and value placed in this system.
These women also recently had the opportunity to attend an educational field trip to Chitwan to learn about alternative farming practices. What grows here at this community bank is more than crops but collective empowerment, leadership and shared hope for these women.
